Likely on getaway is the most frequent rationale for traveling globally. In Sweden, 80% of countrywide flight emissions are induced by leisure and holiday getaway vacation. Our current research studied how media articles or blog posts, ads, and images from well-known magazines and newspapers replicate shifting ideas and assumptions about holidays by plane in Swedish society.

To examine changing sights and representations of vacation air journey, we analysed these media content articles and pictures from 1950 to 2019. We appeared for popular themes (like the reason of holidays), and determined how these themes were represented in excess of time. For example, we observed that the plan of a holiday as restorative has been consistent more than time, but the way to realize that has transformed in some vacation media from traveling to locate sunshine in direction of searching out ordeals nearer to home.

Our assessment documented how Swedish media depicted holiday break air travel over a few phases (see graphic down below): from luxury aspirations (1950s-1990s, mild blue row), to a regular component of extremely cell life (1990s-present, dark blue row), to significantly getting linked to debates about climate alter (2016-present, environmentally friendly row).

Our media investigation discovered five themes of getaway air vacation: the objective of holiday, tips of the excellent lifestyle, time, mobility, and local climate modify. These themes were represented differently around time, indicating three phases of sights on air journey (see over).

These shifts are illustrated by the pictures under. For instance, the SAS advert under shows how traveling was viewed as an significant and appreciated part of the holiday experience in the 1950s, with the plane excursion found as relaxed and luxurious.

Slow travel

The media started off to replicate a shift in attitudes about flying to vacation locations articulated by some sections of society. Coverage of this new period also demonstrates growing issue for the value of performing with urgency to tackle the local weather crisis dwelling according to one’s values taking moral obligation for climate damage and having fun with local climate-welcoming travelling.

Conversations about averting traveling became much additional superior profile from 2016 when superstars, journalists, lecturers, and campaigners begun to publicly pledge to prevent traveling in the Swedish news media.
